Working Teens
Is your teenager working or thinking of getting a job? According to the U.S. Department of Labor, approximately 2.3 million adolescents age 16-17 worked in this country in 2005 (the most recent year for which statistics are available). The department’s surveys suggest that 80% of teenagers will work for pay at some point before leaving high school.
There are pros and cons when it comes to teenagers working. Some of the pros are:
*teens earning their own spending money
*teens learn about responsibility
*builds teens confidence in themselves
Some of the cons are:
*takes time away from schoolwork and time with family
*may put some teens into adult situations before they are ready
*may affect teens grades
If your teen wants to work, discuss the pros and cons with him/her. Let your teen know how you feel about him/her working and listen to how your teenager feels about going to work. If you or your teen want more information, check out a site called TeenWorkers, which is run by the Department of Labor.
This site talks about the rights and responsibilities of teenage workers. It has sections for teens, parents, educators and employers. It’s a great place to find information on working teens, no matter who you are!

Or, they can get a job working for a company like 451 Press, and have very little infringement upon their schoolwork and family time.
