Chauffeur Mom!

by Gayle

Ever feel as though your life is run by your teen? I definitely do at times! My 16-year-old daughter is one of those over-achieving kids who thinks she absolutely MUST be at school from the second the doors open in the morning, until they’re locked in the evening! She participates in marching band, jazz band, the math team, the academic team, the Beta club…and the list goes on and on. Then there are all the outside interests! It seems as though a high percentage of my day is spent running her around to all her various activities. If she weren’t an only child, I don’t know how I’d do it.

I complain about it a lot. But then I remember that she’ll be going away to college in about two-and-a-half years. I’ll have to help my only child pack all her things, take her away from home, set her up in a dorm room and then come home to an empty house. “Sniff”

I start thinking about how much I’ll miss her. About how much I’d like to drive her to school in the morning and laugh at the inane comments made by callers on our favorite morning radio show. I’ll be longing for the opportunity to pick her up at 6 or 7 p.m., and drive her home, while we talk about how our days went, how she’s doing in school and how much homework she has for that night.
About how I’d just about kill for the chance to eat takeout food and watch a rerun of “The Gilmore Girls” with her.

Excuse me, but I have to go now. I feel a sudden urge to mark my three-year calendar, so I’ll know precisely what dates I need to start looking for the family cell phone plan with the most anytime minutes!

Gee, but they grow up so fast!

I am a freshman at college this year, and am a 9 hour drive from home. It is tough, but both sides (parent and “child”) will get as used to i as is possivle. I know you will miss your daughter, but take heart in the fact that she will miss you too, even if she doesn’t say it. =)

    David,

Thanks for that last sentence. I needed to hear that! Hope you and your parents are both doing okay!

    Hi Gayle,
I’m a single parent of 2 girls. My oldest daughter went off to college last year. Only off to college was about 2 miles away and UC Berkeley. She announced to me that she wanted to stay home with me as long as possible. She cut my “1 down 2 to go” party…Joking aside, I’m glad she’s at home. She told me she would miss me even if she lived on campus.

  4. Tracey Says:

Oops, that is parent of 3 girls.

  5. Gayle Says:

    Tracey,

We have the University of Georgia right near us. However, for the past two years, my daughter has had her heart set on majoring in archaeology, and UGA doesn’t offer it. So, she will have to go further away from home. I’m hoping, though, that it’ll be close enough that she can visit often on weekends and that we’ll be able to visit her on campus. Thanks for stopping by!
